Alfa plans first V8 for 30 years

Alfa Romeo is secretly working on a new V8 engine that uses Fiat’s new Multiair valve management system to boost power and cut fuel consumption and emissions.

Alfa sources say it won’t be a large-capacity engine; instead, expect something around 3.0 litres. The firm is working on both naturally aspirated and twin-turbo versions.

The new engine will be the first all-Alfa V8 since the Montreal went out of production in 1977, and is likely to be used in the replacement for the 166.

Alfa is looking at basing this car on the next Chrysler 300C, which would make it rear-wheel drive.

    2011 Alfa Romeo 169 autoevolution


Although initially promised to arrive onto the market by the end of this year, the bad economic situation pushed the release of the Alfa Romeo 169 way into the future. The replacement of the Alfa 166 will arrive, according to the most optimist estimates, sometimes in late 2010. Of course, there are those saying it will not be here until 2012.

As you can see, those who got impatient to wait for the real thing, set out to release a few CGIs of the 169, as expected (or should we say hoped) to look like. And, to be honest, if Alfa choses to go this way in terms of design, the 169 may turn into something the 166 never was: a hit.

From a visual standpoint, the 169 is said to mark the definitive departure of Alfa Romeo from the current design cues for its large sedan lines in the years to come. Although the CGIs show a front end inspired, but not quite the same as in today's Alfas, the rear end may present radical changes, bringing it closer to the lines of the Mercedes CLS or the Volkswagen Passat CC.


Rumor about the 169 has been around for quite some time. The car itself has been marked as one of the Alfa Romeo models to hit US shores in 2009, but, as we said, economic conditions, as well as the lack of a viable platform, had put a firm end to that. For now, as Fiat's alliance with American manufacturer Chrysler made such an outcome possible again. It opened the doors to both new platforms and a dealership network for the car to be distributed through.


Although nothing is yet confirmed, the 169 is expected to be a rear-wheel drive platform, powered by a variety of engines, with power outputs ranging from 170 to 250 hp.

Price wise, the four door coupe may be in the 40,000 euro range. Further details will likely surface in bulk starting next year.

   Alfa Giulia nu va aparea inainte de 2012






Alfa Romeo a anuntat, prin vocea presedintelui sau Sergio Cravero, ca inlocuitorul actualului model 159, care se va numi Alfa Giulia, va sosi in 2012. Practic, modelul cu care marca italiana se va relansa in SUA  va aparea cu un an mai tarziu fata de data anuntata initial.

Din punct de vedere estetic, se pare ca Alfa Romeo va continua limbajul de design pe care l-a inaugurat pe 8C Competizione si, mai apoi, pe MiTo. Italienii vor folosi platforma C-Evoluzione, extrem de avantajoasa datorita faptului ca este modulara si usor adaptabila unor nevoi specifice. In plus, va creste ampatamentul, iar consolele vor fi mai scurte.

Referitor la motorizarile care se vor regasi sub capota noii Giulia, se stie ca din gama benzinarelor vor face parte motorul 1.75 Turbo de 200 CP, precum si noul 1.4 MultiAir, disponibil in doua versiuni de putere: 150 si 170 CP. Varful de gama va fi un V6 de 3,2 litri a carui putere de varf va fi impinsa catre 300 de "cai". Familia diesel va contine un 2.0 JTD de 170 CP si un puternic 1.9 TwinTurbo de 190 CP.

What you see here is our best guess at what the next-generation Alfa Romeo 159 replacement -- rumored to be called the Guilia -- will look like. The new Alfa is due out in Europe by late 2011.

As you can see, it's definitely an Alfa Romeo. And in true Alfa Romeo fashion, it's very attractive. Many of the same sumptuous, athletic styling cues portrayed by contemporary models like the 8C and MiTo have been integrated into the Giulia's sheetmetal. Its heritage is most obvious from the front, as it wears the traditional tiered Alfa nose and bold twin hood lines.

To the sides of the prominent trademark are pulled back HID headlamps that rake beautifully into each of the quarter panels. Take a peek at the hard side view and you'll notice a sleeker profile with significantly shorter windows than the outgoing 159.

Designers continued the sporty aesthetics to the rear clip and included a subtle decklid lip atop the trunk. Sharp, ultra-thin LED taillights further ensure the striking model gets noticed while strolling on the Autostrada.

Power will likely continue to be derived from a 1.8L four-cylinder engine, but now with direct-injection and a turbocharger to produce 200 hp (up from 138 hp). A six-speed manual or automatic with electronic limited-slip differential is rumored to send power to the front wheels.

Given the approved Chrysler/Fiat merger, and what we've seen of future product plans, it could only a matter of time before the Guilia reaches our shores. Or, at least, that's what we'd love to believe. How about you? motortrend.com

The open-air version of the highly coveted – and almost universally admired – 8C Competizione, the 8C Spider is a product of pure demand. But with only 500 examples set to be produced and just 35 of those destined for American shores, only a handful of eligible parties will get them. And those Yanks who are lucky enough to do so do will have to pay at least $299,000 for the privilege.

That list price alone – confirmed to Autoblog courtesy of Maserati North America (which is handling the model's distribution) – makes the 8C Spider the most expensive production Alfa ever. But with demand far outstripping supply, you can bet most of them will be trading hands at far higher prices than that – at least in the short term. Alfa Romeo 8C Spider?



Angelina Jolie is the most beautiful woman in the world, though not if you hate tattoos. Paris is the most romantic city on Earth, unless you dislike the French. And Claude Monet is the best artist ever . . . so long as you don’t have an aversion to water lilies.

There are no conflicts, however, with the Alfa Romeo 8C Spider, which is, as motoring cognoscenti agree, the most beautiful modern car ever to grace tarmac. The new Spider is the topless version of the 8C Competizione coup? — Alfa’s first supercar in more than a decade — and despite the chunky £174,000 price tag, the Spider’s limited production run of 500 has been snapped up faster than the latest must-have handbag in a January sale.

The Italian manufacturer is tapping into its two-seater, soft-top heritage, which includes the 1950s Giulietta Spider and the most famous car in the marque’s history, Dustin Hoffman’s Duetto from the 1967 film The Graduate. It is, however, this thoroughly modern 8C Spider, with its carbon-fibre body draped elegantly over a Maserati-derived steel chassis, that will be remembered as the most beautiful. Its curves leave you spellbound, and even the most articulate of commentators would run out of superlatives with which to describe it.

It is markedly masculine, yet there’s a certain femininity - the sort you observe only when a woman is painting her fingernails ... naked. You’ll just have to trust me on that one.

There’s no sign of the coup?’s aggressive roofline or moody windows, though fortunately the voluptuous rear end — so sensational that you won’t tire of being in its slipstream - has been left alone.

The styling can be credited to Alfa’s Centro Stile team, which didn’t just chop the top off an 8C and file the edges but instead created a new, rounded windscreen with a carbon-fibre frame, the Z-fold roof and a fresh set of aerodynamic aids (not to mention 90kg more mass in the form of roof mechanicals and chassis stiffening).

The crowning glory of this moving artwork is the roof — two overlapping fabric sheets that repel the elements and cosset the cabin in equal measure. It is initially unlocked by hand, to save weight at the locking point on the windscreen, but after a gentle skyward prompt, electric motors take over. The material then folds itself elegantly in three and is swallowed up behind the headrests in one gulp, leaving a clean profile. This topless transformation takes less than 10 seconds to complete, but isn’t quite as clever as it looks, as the roof won’t open or shut on the move.

The two sports seats are the thinnest but most supportive chairs this side of a racing car’s, and the cockpit oozes the usual luxurious lashings of leather, carbon fibre and hand-finished aluminium, though it does distinguish itself from similar supercar indulgences. Be warned, though, that if you’re off for a weekend break, it’s a toss-up between bringing luggage or bringing a passenger, as the boot will scarcely contain a hat.

Once the top is dropped, the next button you press is the one to start the engine. A “bwaar, pop, bwaar, pop, pop, bwaar” sound follows (though that’s enough of the excited vocals from me) and then the meticulously thought-through noise of the Alfa’s 4.7‑litre V8 bursting into life. Like all great Alfas, the 8C Spider has the “unmistakable voice” demanded by Alfa’s acoustics department, achieved through fine-tuning of the intake and exhaust-system valves.

If you’ve ever heard a Ferrari F430 shoot past you in anger, then imagine that same noise in 7.1 surround sound, because the Alfa makes it on the approach, too. Which is a bit of an own goal for Ferrari, which, with help from Maserati, builds this engine. Ferrari’s loss, though, is most certainly the 8C Spider driver’s gain — as you will find if you drive the Spider roof down through an Alpine tunnel, savouring its apocalyptic soundtrack.

From tickover to 7500rpm, the V8’s decibels rise to a surely illegal level, before falling momentarily as you select the next ratio; it’s bellow, bark and boom all the way through the six gears until you max out at 181mph.

Although Ferrari and Maserati have allowed Alfa to play around in their stock cupboards, the company hasn’t exactly been given an?
access-all-areas pass. The sequential gearbox, while not exactly sluggish, has gearchanges three times slower than those of a 430 Scuderia, even with the Spider’s Sport button pressed to hasten reactions and the driver pulling on the steering-wheel paddles. Unless you can compare the two, though, such tardiness will never trouble you.

Whichever gear you’re in, there is a magical moment at about 3000rpm when the exhaust note deepens and your grin widens; that’s when you realise this V8 is the perfect match for the car’s flawless appearance. No wonder buyers have been magnetised: this is the fastest piece of haute couture a girl can slip into.

If you’re looking for a truly inspiring driver’s car, though — the next Porsche 911 — this isn’t it. At Alfa’s test track in Balocco, northern Italy, the rear-drive Spider is happy to swing its back end from left to right with the traction control turned off, though you need to quickly apply opposite lock to the steering to keep on the straight and narrow. Get it right and the engine pulls strongly out of each bend, firing you down the straight with immense energy, although it’s all done in quite a heavy-handed fashion, and there’s a surprising amount of body roll induced with each change in direction. Regrettably, this Alfa is not a precision machine; it feels more like a muscle car. However, it is bursting with passion and soul, and you can’t knock it for that.

Sure, it’s expensive: you could almost buy two Aston Martin Vantage V8 Roadsters for the same money. But Alfa says in slightly strained English that this car is “made to measure for the owner’s personality”. That’ll be 500 noisy alpha-male attention-seekers, then, though on the plus side, as they parade through Monaco on a summer’s evening, nobody will be saying: “Not another bloody Ferrari.”

The upcoming Alfa Romeo 169 will be based on a Dodge Charger platform and built in Canada, according to reports.

Analysts IHS Global Insight said the car will go into production in 2011 and cost $62,000 (£38,000) in the US.

The car’s platform sharing comes as a result of the alliance between Fiat and Chrysler, the US manufacturer’s 300 model sharing the same underpinnings as the Charger.

Global Insight reports that the Alfa 169 will be built at the Bramalea Production facility in Brampton, Ontario.

Analysts at the company also said the Fiat 500 will be produced in Toluca, Mexico, for sale in the United States beginning in July 2011.The 500 is expected to reach a sales volume of 25,000 units in 2015, it added.

Parlare dell’ammiraglia milanese, tuttavia, equivale a considerare vera una leggenda metropolitana: noi cadiamo sempre in “fallo”, venendo puntualmente smentiti.

Questa, perodovrebbe essere l’occasione propizia. Anche perch? i dirigenti avrebbero gia individuato lo stabilimento canadese di Bramalea, nell’Ontario, quale sito produttivo. ? Alfa Romeo Mi.To. este primul model dup? revolu?ia numit? Alfa 8C ?i primul Alfa Romeo de clas? mic?, din era modern?. De asemenea vine cu un nou motor diesel, deci vorbim de un test al premierelor.

? ?La modul cum arat? noua Alfa Romeo Mi.To. ar fi o mare dezam?gire ca ?inuta de drum s? nu se ridice la nivelul esteticiii. Din fericire exist? ldestule ucruri care fac cinste m?rcii ?i se remarc? prin sportivitate, dar ?i c?teva aspecte care te entuziasmeaz? mai pu?in. Acest model este bazat pe platforma lui Fiat Grande Punto (?i a lui Opel Corsa), deci ve?i spune c? prea mult nu poate fi diferit fa?? de v?rul bun din Torino ?i cel prin alian?? din Russelsheim.

? ??i da ?i nu, este r?spunsul la ?ntrebarea retoric? lansat? anterior. Dar p?n? a diseca plusurile ?i minusurile este nevoie de o explica?ie. Spuneam ?n episodul anterior de un selector magic plasat l?ng? schimb?tor. Schimbarea este at?t de mare, ?nc?t ??i vine s? te dai jos, s? vezi dac? mai este aceea?i ma?in?. Suspensia se ?nt?re?te consistent, devenind chiar agasant de rigid? pe suprafe?ele denivelate, propulsorul prinde via??, devenind mai dornic s? alerge, iar direc?ia "se ?ncordeaz?" pu?in. Dezavantajul acestui mod este c?, procesul de ?nt?rire al suspensiei (destul de ferm? oricum) te face s? fugi de denivel?ri, ca un mexican de grip? porcin?.

? ?Modul All Weather, nu am apucat s? ?l test?m riguros (a fost soare cam toat? s?pt?m?na), dar am observat c? acesta ?mbl?nze?te accelera?ia pentru a face fa?? la condi?iile rutiere alunecoase. Dar pe toate cele 3 moduri, ?ntr-o m?sur? mai mic? pe Dynamic, direc?ia este destul de moale ?i s?rac? ?n feedback. ?n schimb. Alfa Romeo vine cu o inova?ie foarte interesant?, ?i anume un diferen?ial eletronic denumit Q2.

? ?Acesta, ?mpreun? cu ESP-ul, fr?neaz? sistematic roata care pierde aderen?? simul?nd rolul ?i efectele unuia mecanic. Este o dotare standard pe toate versiunile ?i ??i permite s? abordezi virajele mai tare dec?t o spune instinctul t?u de conservare. Destul de inteligent acest sistem ?i unul dintre principalele plusuri al acestui model, dar nu cel mai important.

? ?Alfa Romeo Mi.To m-a cucerit prin modul cum arat? la exterior ?i probabil o s? considera?i c? voi urma aceea?i partitur? ?i la interior. V? ve?i ?n?ela, ?i ceea ce nu m-a convins este excesul de glamour din habitaclu. Pentru nivelul de chipare Progression, cel testat de noi, exist? dou? op?iuni de personalizare a habitaclului, una monocrom? cu tonalit??i de negru pe toat? plan?? de bord ?i cea bicolor? cu o combina?ie ro?u aprins ?i negru, existent? pe Mi.To-ul de test.

De?i acest ro?u replic? fidel cromatica exteriorului, ?n interior este prea mult pentru un b?rbat (?i o spune unul care ador? Fiat 500, cu al s?u interior funky). De asemenea, ?nc? un detaliu care tr?deaz? valen?ele feminine ale modelui este m?ciulia schimb?torului, care pare acoperit? cu cristale Swarovsky, mai ales ?n condi?ii de luminozitate ridicat?. Din punct de vedere al func?ionalit??ii nu exist? ?ns? niciun impediment ?n acest sens ?i levierul st? foarte bine ?n m?n?.

? ?Interesant este faptul c? se simte o arom? u?oar? de Alfa 8C chiar ?i la interior, ?n special volanul ?i zona ceasurilor de bord. Nu v? imagina?i c? ?n Alfa Romeo Mi.To. ceasurile de bord ?i "covrigul" au form? de supercar, dar acolo undeva se vede o urm? de pedigree comun. ?n schimb, parc? venit de pe o ma?in? cu mul?i cai putere este selectorul D.N.A. plasat jos l?ng? schimb?tor. Acesta, pe l?ng? aspectul foarte sportiv, chiar este dirijorul care transfrom? acest model din boem ?n dinamic, dar despre asta vorbim m?ine.

? ?Pozi?ia la volan este specific? unui coupe ?i datorit? multiplelor reglaje se poate configur? c?t mai lejer. Dar dac? tragi volanul la maxim spre tine o s? consta?i c? modularitatea acestuia are ca pre? un minus estetic, reprezentat de suprfa?a textil? care acoper? ca un burduf coloana ?n partea superioar?. O dat? ce treci peste acest neajuns ?i urci privirea mai sus consta?i un design foarte curat al ceasurilor de bord ?i o iluminare sportiv?, dar pl?cut? a cadranelor.

? ?Ergonomia din punctul de vedere al ?oferului este bun?, arhitectura comenzilor pe plan?a de bord fiind simpl? ?i clar?, doar un singur set de comutatoare cre?ndu-mi probleme la ac?ionare. ?i anume cele trei aferente climatiz?ri neautomate, care par u?or neaderente ?n condi?iile ?n care este nevoie de o ac?ionare hot?r?t?

? ?Alfa Romeo Mi.To. este foarte italian ?n interior. Culori pasionale, forme prelungi ?i chiar sclipici, toate fac parte din peisajul interior al lui Alfa Mi.To.

? ?Pasagerul din dreapta se va sim?i ?n largul s?u, iar dac? nu se va l?f?i prea mult ?n spate ?i cel de pe banchet? se va sim?i confortabil. Pentru un model coupe, accesul se face destul de u?or la locurile din spate ?i chiar se poate sta ?n condi?ii bune dac? se ajunge la un consens cu ocupan?ii din fa??. Spa?iul la cap este decent, dar lumina nu prea p?trunde, datorit? geamurilor mici.

? Un aspect inedit este plasarea suporturilor de pahare, localizate spre exteriorul banchetei ?i nu pe mijloc a?a cum se ?nt?mpl? de obicei la anumite modele. Fiind un model care mizeaz? pe o abordare sportiv?, nu exceleaz? la capitolul spa?ii de dezvoltare, dar acest lucru nu ne deranjeaz?, absolut deloc.

? ?Ca ?i pasager, cu mai mult r?gaz s? inspectezi materialele din habitaclu, vei observa c? materialele de pe bord sunt destul de dure ?i c?, datorit? u?ilor f?r? rame, deschiderea portierelor nu se face a?a de u?or, acestea fiind destul de grele. ?n schimb acest model pare mai solid ?n habitaclu dec?t Fiat Grande Punto.

? ?Portbagajul nu are valori de familist?, av?nd o capacitate de doar 270 de litri. Cu toate c? pare ad?nc, este destul de ?ngust ?i gura de ?nc?rcare nu este foarte cuprinz?toare.? Bancheta nu ajut? la sporirea capacit??ii, pentru c? nu se pliaz? perfect plan, nici m?car cu tetierele scoase. Putem spune c? exist? ma?ini ?n aceast? clas? mai practice, dar cine ??i cump?r?, ?n fond, un Alfa Romeo pentru portbagaj?

? ?n schimb exist? un detaliu familist (v?zut la monovolume) care exist? ?i la Alfa Mi.To. Este vorba de indicatorui plasat ?n proximitatea oglinzii retrovizare care ??i arat? cine poart? centur? ?i cine nu, pe l?ng? avertizorul sonor. Probabil italienii se g?ndesc la bambinii care vor refuza s? poarte centura pe locurile din spate. De? data asta nu v? mai merge copii...

1750 Turbo Petrol 200 HP

This power unit carries on the great Alfa Romeo 1750 cc tradition. 3000 cc performance in a small sized and consumption engine. Here are the solutions behind that result.

“Scavenging” technology
Slow running torque maximisation and really fast response to the driver. Angle and valve crossing times are defined more precisely generating a flow of air from the intake collector directly to the exhaust and fast? turbo-compressor drive. The result is surprising: pull-in torque at 1500 revs increased 70% compared to a traditional turbo.

Turbo
The new turbo-compressor is linked to an innovative “Pulse Converter” type exhaust collector: that’s the secret to increase the slow running torque. Both collector and turbine are in precision cast stainless steel for really high operating temperatures (max 1020 ?C) very important to reduce consumption at medium/high speeds.

Performance
Pull-in torque (320 Nm) reached at 1400 revs is a point of absolute excellence. This guarantees excellent performance without having to use gears too often. And then the high specific 115 HP/l power is reached at the relatively low speed of 4750 revs/min, staying constant till 5500 revs/min.

Emissions
Thanks to double injection and “high pressure start”, emission value is Euro 5 with a relatively small catalyser (positive effects on performance).
